This cycle ride along the Hampshire/Berkshire border is between the railway stations of Stratfield Mortimer and Bramley and passes through the Roman town of Calleva and the pretty village of Silchester. A regular train service operating between Basingstoke and Reading stops at both stations providing a convenient way to return to the start.

From Stratfield Mortimer railway station turn left into Station Road and then left at the roundabout heading towards Mortimer village centre. Shortly after passing the church and school turn left into Pitfield Lane.

Follow this quiet country lane past Brocas Land Farm and Sheepgrove Farm before turning right into Clappers Farm Road. Climb the hill to the T-junction at Church Lane and Wall Lane. Silchester Church can be found a short distance down Church Lane and is well worth a visit. Turn right into Wall Lane and follow the road around the edge of the Roman town of Calleva. The ampitheatre can be found beside the bridleway opposite Manor Farm House.

At the end of Wall Lane and after passing Calleva visitor car park, turn left into Kings Road and then left to enter Silchester village. The Calleva Arms offers food and refreshments. Turn left into Holly Lane and then right into Bramley Road. At the Three Ashes junction turn left and then immediately right. Descend past Lower Farm to the railway lane. Turn right into Minchens lane and as you enter Bramley village turn left to reach the railway station.
