Mortimer to Bramley via Silchester

This cycle ride along the Hampshire/Berkshire border is between the railway stations of Stratfield Mortimer and Bramley and passes through the Roman town of Calleva and the pretty village of Silchester. A regular train service operating between Basingstoke and Reading provides a convenient way to return to the start.
From Mortimer railway station turn left into Station Road and head down the hill. At the mini-roundabout turn left in the direction of Mortimer village centre. Shortly after passing the church and school turn left into Pitfield Lane.
Follow this quiet country lane past Brocas Land Farm and Sheepgrove Farm before turning right into Clappers Farm Road. Climb the hill to the T-junction at Church Lane and Wall Lane. St. Mary's Church can be found a short distance down Church Lane and is well worth a visit. Turn right into Wall Lane and follow the road around the edge of the Roman town of Calleva. The ampitheatre can be found beside the bridleway opposite Manor Farm House.
At the end of Wall Lane and after passing Calleva visitor car park, turn left into Kings Road and then left into Bramley Road. Fork right into Little London Road to enter Silchester village. The Calleva Arms offers food and refreshments.
From Silchester village turn left into Holly Lane and then right into Bramley Road. At the junction with Ash Lane turn left and then bear right still continuing along Bramley Road. Descend past Lower Farm to the railway line. Just before you reach the bridge over the track turn right into Minchens lane. As you enter Bramley village turn left to reach the railway station.
