Turf Hill and Holmsley Ridge from Burley

A circular trail starting from Burley village centre, across open mostly flat heath to the south and west of the village.

Head south east out of the car park and then bear to the right as the track heads south across Turf Hill. The path cross several streams before climbing very gently towards the railway line. Cross this disused railway line, now a cycle track, at Greenberry Bridge, continue forward and then fork right after 200 metres where the track divides.

Head west along Holmsley Ridge, bear right and head for Whitten Ponds. Continue on to join the road and cross back over the disused railway line.

Immediately after crossing the bridge leave the road on your left hand side. Bear right shortly after joining the path and continue on passing the pond on your left hand side. From the pond the track continues forward for a further kilometre passing heath known as Burnt Axon on your left.

Take the track to your right and ascend gently towards Coffins Holms. As you approach the tree line turn left and then, after almost 100 metres, turn right over a style. Continue through the woods and then descend to the road. Turn right and then join the footpath on your left that follows the road back to the village centre and the car park.

Trail Location

The trail starts at the car park close to the centre of the village. By car Burley can be reached via the A35 from Lyndhurst and Christchurch or from Southampton via the A31. The nearest train station is in Brockenhurst. There are regular bus services to Burley from Ringwood, Southampton and Christchurch.

Assuming a constant pace and no stops, typically it will take 1 hour 35 minutes to walk the distance and along the way 428 calories will be burnt.
