The Ridgeway runs from Overton Hill in Wiltshire to the rolling hills of the Chilterns in Buckinghamshire. East of the River Thames at Goring the trail becomes a footpath for walkers only so we have mapped out our own cycling route that follows bridleways. Most cycling groups finish in Wendover but you can continue for an additional 16 miles to Ivinghoe following bridleways and quiet country lanes.

The trail to Wendover is almost entirely off-road. In dry weather it is suitable for most regular cyclists. In poor weather it can become a tough mountain bike ride that will test both your biking skills and stamina.

If you prefer to walk the trail see Walk The Ridgeway for information and advice.

  • Avebury - Wendover

Most people cycle from west to east, as the wind is usually behind you. However you can of course start in Wendover and finish at Avebury. The wind direction is very important. Cycling into a headwind is exhausting and may prevent you finishing the ride each day.

Itinerary

We have carefully designed two itineraries for groups cycling the whole trail from Avebury to Wendover. The distances shown are a guide only and depend on the accommodation you choose each night. Large groups may need to use hotels and inns in towns nearby. We can provide transport for the group and bikes between the trail and your accommodation.

Avebury stone circle, Wiltshire, England

Two Days

Cycling the Ridgeway over a weekend provides a good challenge for most cyclists and requires decent weather and trail conditions. The second day is shorter, which gives time to return home rather than staying overnight on Sunday.

Day 1 - Avebury to Goring - 43 miles / 69 kms
Day 2 - Goring to Wendover - 29 miles / 47 kms

The Ridgeway National Trail, Oxfordshire, England

Three Days

A 3 day cycling trip gives more time to experience the area and contingency when trail and weather conditions are tough. Return transfers back to your cars or Swindon railway station for your group and bikes can be provided.

Day 1 - Avebury to Wantage - 30 miles / 48 kms
Day 2 - Wantage to Wallingford - 25 miles / 40 kms
Day 3 - Wallingford to Wendover - 25 miles / 40 kms

There is parking at the start of the trail near Avebury although it is a little isolated. There is also a car park in Marlborough. We can meet you at your parked car to collect your luggage and transfer you to the start of the Ridgeway.

At the end of your ride we can collect you from Wendover and drop you back at your car. The journey time between Wendover and Avebury for a minibus pulling a trailer is approximately 2 hours although this varies depending on the time of day. At weekends and on public holidays the journey time can be longer.

Hotels & Inns

We have listed some of the better hotels and inns with links to TripAdvisor where you can read customer reviews and check prices and availability.

When booking accommodation ask if there is secure storage for your bikes and the time breakfast is served in the morning. All should be able to provide packed lunches. For those starting late or cycling long distances, check when evening meals end. If you plan to arrive mid afternoon check that the country inns are open as many close between 3 and 6 pm.

Marlborough is a compact, pretty town with a good range of restaurants and pubs. It is worth considering spending the night here before starting your ride. Using our minibuses and trailers we can drop you at the start of the Ridgeway or you can cycle along a bridleway - using the busy A4 is best avoided.

Wendover is a small market town in the shadow of the Chiltern hills. There are good pubs and restaurants in the centre and a choice of accommodation. The town has a train station with regular services into London Marylebone.
